 NOTES FROM THE GM

Hi Everyone,

We have held what’s probably our best Product & Sales training session to date here at Blagdon in Quarter 1, 2009. We had a great group of people, consisting of British, Danish, Italian, Swedish and Belgian representatives. The competitive analysis and value selling sections seemed to add a lot to previous sessions and we have had some great feedback which we are already using to further improve the 2 days training which will be repeated in April. From the participants feedback we see a lot of positivity about growing our business together. By using the features and benefits to monetise the advantages we have over the competition for the End User, we are helping to drive a different approach and way of thinking. These sessions are one of the most satisfying parts of my job here at Blagdon. If you are interested in joining us, why don’t you let us know? If we get sufficient participants we can organise another class later in the year.

On the 11th-15th May Blagdon will be participating at ACHEMA-Frankfurt in Germany. We are located within the IDEX stand U7-V9 in Hall 8.0. This is one of the most important exhibitions globally and we are proud to be part of it. You may already be familiar with Blagdon, why don’t you come to the stand to see what other excellent products IDEX has top offer. Until next time…..

 ENGINEERING

INTEGRAL PLATE DIAPRAGMS

50-316 - Another Integral Plate diaphragm is to be added to the Blagdon new One-Piece PTFE diaphragm range. The latest being the 2” diaphragm. The Part No. is 50-316 and will be available to order in the near future. These diaphragms don’t need separate Front and Back plates, making them easier to install and safer to use in hazardous duties. Blagdon are continuing to work on approval of the other diaphragms in the range, the next being the B25 Moulded & B25 Full Flow range. This will be available later in the year, followed by the B40 to complete the range.

 PUMP CLINIC

AIR INLET CONNECIONS

The Blagdon Air Valve system is promoted and commended for it’s reliability, simplicity and ease of use. However, occasionally customers, who switch to Blagdon from our competitors, have problems with pumps that will not start. This is usually because the compressed air has been connected incorrectly. The Inlet connection is always into the Block fastened to the pump centre with four bolts. The Exhaust Silencer always connects directly opposite, never the other way round. Always refer to the Manufacturers Installation and Maintenance instructions before commencing any new installation.

 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

PUMP TESTING

Are all pumps tested before despatch?

Every Blagdon pump which is manufactured within our Washington factory undergoes a functionality test before despatch at no extra cost.

This is to ensure reliability and consistency and provide customer confidence that Blagdon pumps are fit for purpose from the first operation.

The testing process is explained below.

PROCEDURE FOR TESTING:
  • Place pump on top of tank, connect adaptors to suction, discharge and air inlets
  • Connect suction and discharge pipes to adaptors
  • Open suction and discharge valves, connect air supply and fit exhaust
  • Gradually open air valve, when pump cycles check breakout pressure
  • Open air supply valve fully. Check for any abnormal noises, vibrations or irregularities
  • Run pump for 15 seconds (an average cycle rate should ensure full prime)
  • Close discharge valve fully, whilst pump has stopped (stalled out), check fluid pressure at the discharge pressure gauge (should equal air pressure), check for fluid leads around cover edges and manifold joints, and air leaks at valve block and exhaust
  • Open discharge valve slightly to cycle pump once, close valve and check for fluid and air leaks again
  • Open discharge valve fully, allow pump to cycle at maximum rate
  • Close suction valve, check reading at vacuum pressure gauge over 15 second interval
  • Close air valve and re-open suction valve
  • Check discharge valve is open before disconnecting suction and discharge pipes. Always disconnect side first. Disconnect air supply.
  • Remove all pipework from pump, drain pump, ensuring all excess fluid is removed from pump
  • Visually inspect pump for any damage and remove pump from tank

 WHATS HAPPENING IN ASIA

Overall 2008 has been a fairly good year for Blagdon even though the market conditions have not been very favourable. Most distributors have grown their business year to year thought out Asia including the Middle East, and every single distributor deserves a pat on their back, “well done and keep up the good work.”

With more challenging times ahead in the global meltdown in the financial system and worsening economy, we sincerely believe that our distributors are able to weather through these difficult times and perform remarkably well again in 2009 and years to come.

Our Blagdon pump slogan says the “The one company that will deliver highly engineered fluid moving solutions and service in niche markets and extreme condition environments”; it should also state that we can persevere even in extreme market condition as well.

Happy selling.

 WHATS HAPPENING IN EUROPE

The last 14 months have been fun and challenging within the European region. We saw great things taking place and have felt the turn in economic conditions.

ECO (European Commercial Operations) has implemented many changes over the last year providing better communication, more effective and efficient process; all looking for better ways to partner with our distribution.

In times like we are facing now we should be more cognisant of repair opportunities, effective Value Selling and Key Target Accounts. Working together as partners will drive to greater growth in our market segments and a better focus on areas of opportunity.

In a few months most of us will meet at Achema, please stop by the IDEX booth located at U7-V9 to see how our products can help in process effectiveness and efficiencies. You will find new products from various business units on display and have the ability to discuss new opportunities to forge ahead.

Our thanks go to Blagdon for their outstanding support and interaction with ECO as we work together to grow market share.

Nick Dorsch – VP Commercial Operations; Europe, Africa and Latin America

 MARKETING

PRODUCT & SALES TRAINING COURSES NOW AVAILABLE

"Classroom" Setup

Hands on pump building

We have had great success with the two training courses we have ran so far in 2009. Our training courses although are agenda led, we are very conscious that our attendees are looking for specific things relating to the Blagdon product. With this in mind we have put together a two day course which includes some of the following areas:

  • Pump Operation / Technical Overview
  • Features and Benefits
  • Pump Building
  • Blagdon vs Competition
  • Marketing
  • Application Stories
  • Website
  • Sales Techniques and Tools
  • Pump Selection Programme
  • Kit Selector Programme
Also there are members of staff on hand for the full duration of the course to answer any service, technical questions specific to your organisation.

All of the Blagdon courses cover all costs except travel and accommodation although this is organised by Blagdon.

Our courses are second to none, but don’t just believe me, this is what one of our attendees had to say…

Julian Driver, Director at Pump & Package, UK said "the 2 day training course is a must for all Blagdon Distributors. After representing Blagdon for over 15 years you are never too old to learn! With recent design improvements of the airside also testing carried out by Sunderland University on volume and air consumption comparisons against other pumps, I found these very useful tools to sell Blagdon pumps against the competition. I came away enthused in selling the Blagdon product in these difficult times, knowing I am selling an excellent quality pump and having the full back up of the Blagdon staff".

If you are interested in joining one of our courses please contact Joanne Shutt on jshutt@idexcorp.com or +44 (0) 191 418 8711 for available dates.

 HUMAN RESOURCES

Geno Smith - Buyer

Blagdon would like to congratulate Geno Smith on his successful completion of his N.V.Q. Level 4 (National Vocational Qualification) in Supply Chain Management. After completing the Level 3 in 2007, Geno decided that he would like to continue with his studies in this field.

With personnel changes at Blagdon in 2008, he was Blagdon’s first choice for the vacant Buyer role. Encouraged by Jason Carpenter (Purchasing Manager), who holds the MCIPS (Membership Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply) qualification, Geno continued with his studies, and passed with flying colours.

Geno has recently applied to the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply for full membership of CIPS and we should hopefully know in the next few weeks if his application has been successful. This will be a great benefit to both Geno and Blagdon, as then all our Purchasing process employees will have this worldwide recognised qualification.
